Call for Papers “Zoophilologica” 2/2025: “Invertebrates: tremendum et fascinosum” edited by Magdalena Kozhevnikova

Call for Papers to „Zoophilologica”, „Invertebrates: tremendum et fascinosum”.

invertebrates, which include animals as diverse as sponges, mollusks, insects, arachnids, nematodes, flatworms, rotifers and arthropods, are probably the most underestimated group of animals. Considering that invertebrates constitute about 97% of all creatures living on Earth today, we pay them far too little attention, stuck in an anthropomorphizing paradigm and looking closely and compassionately mainly at those who are similar to us. Meanwhile, invertebrates, thrown into one bag of biological classification regardless of the evolutionary differences that divide them, inhabit all ecosystems and surprise with the richness of their shapes, life strategies and skills. They arouse disgust (like centipedes) or terror (like arachnids), but also delight (like butterflies) and intrigue (like octopuses).

In order to break the mold, the editorial team invites authors to shed more light on invertebrates and the role they play in various ecosystems from the perspective of philosophical, sociological, cultural, literary, etc. research. The proposed topics include:

  • Invertebrates and humans: parasitism, alliances
  • Undesirable invertebrates in the home and garden: insect control
  • From arachnophobia to arachnophilia; terrariums
  • Secrets of invertebrate minds (e.g. octopuses, ants)
  • Invertebrates in world cuisines; (un)ethical diets
  • Invertebrates in literature and art; bioart
  • Invertebrates and the world of technology: cyborg insects, artificial bees
  • Beekeeping, beekeeping; protection of pollinating insects
  • Experiments on invertebrates; Invertebrata in the laboratory.
